Advantages of Double Disc Grinding for Parts

When part integrity is on the line, customers turn to Alternative Surface Grinding for our reliable services and expertise with double disc grinding.

World-class grinding equipment coupled with our custom precision workholding ensure quality every step of the way. We meet diverse requirements and can process virtually any material including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, composites and even rubber parts.

We can maintain a thickness tolerance of .0002” while holding the surfaces parallel within .0001”. Hyprolapping technology allows us to achieve flatness up to 2 light bands or 23 millionths of an inch.

Customers benefit from the speed of this process, low costs, and exceptional precision. Our prices are competitive, and our quality and service are unmatched.

When you need increased efficiency, reduced cycle times, and lower production costs, turn to Alternative Surface Grinding. Learn more about double-disc grinding and hyprolapping.

Double-disc grinding applications

Double-disc grinding works with aluminum, copper, bronze, cast iron, steel, stainless steel, many other ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and even plastic. Because it removes equal amounts of stock from both sides of a workpiece simultaneously, it can reduce the residual stress on the workpiece, which improves the quality of secondary operations and final machining. Double-disc grinding works well with stampings, die castings, blanks, rings, valves and small metal parts.

When to Choose Double Disc Grinding vs. Hyprolapping

Double disc grinding and hyprolapping are both two-sided flat grinding processes, but they serve different applications. Double disc grinding is the faster, higher-volume choice which are ideal for achieving tight parallelism and flatness in the .0003″ range on medium-to-large-diameter parts. It works efficiently across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composites with cycle times and costs that suit production environments.

Choose double disc grinding when production speed, cost per part, and consistent thickness across high volumes are the priorities. If your tolerance requirement falls in the .0002″–.0006″ range and your application does not require an optical-grade surface finish, double disc grinding is typically the most efficient solution.

For applications requiring flatness measured in light bands such as gasket-less metal-to-metal seals, aerospace components, or hydraulic valve bodies, hyprolapping delivers a finer result.

Quality Assurance and ISO 9001:2015 Certification

Alternative Surface Grinding is ISO 9001:2015 certified. Every double disc grinding job is measured and documented to ensure conformance to your dimensional requirements before shipment. Our quality system covers incoming material inspection, in-process measurement, and final dimensional verification.

We serve customers in aerospace, automotive, medical, firearms, and industrial manufacturing, industries where dimensional consistency is non-negotiable. If you require a Certificate of Conformance or first-article inspection (FAI) with your order, contact us to discuss your requirements.
